Doctor’s Diary November 6, 2018: Voting and healthcare

Voting and healthcare

The epitome of democracy is the right to vote.  This singular action empowers all eligible citizens a role in society.  But over the past decades, voting enthusiasm has waned, while manipulation of this privilege has grown.

Controlling votes is now a self-serving business strategy especially related to healthcare.

On a macroscopic level, hospitals, insurance companies, and Big Pharma financially influence legislative votes allowing outrageous profits at the expense of ailing Americans.

On a microscopic level, hospital administrators have overpowered doctors.  It starts with corralling votes of the hospital Board of Directors by dangling business contracts and usurping laws meant to thwart conflict of interest.  Then, physician leadership succumbs to the same monetary temptation and vote to change hospital processes and procedures manipulating and threatening dismissal of staff doctors.  Ultimately, patient care is affected.

Public relations aggrandize hospital prowess, while sweeping out of sight malpractice and aberrant care.  Short cuts are taken, cutting corners is common, and healthcare suffers.

Controlling votes comes at all levels.

Defeating voter manipulation is powerful.

Get informed.

Vote.

I agree. People need to be informed. And yes, people are somehow swayed by big bucks and healthcare suffers (as you say).
