Finding a doctor you can trust
Seniors have always trusted doctors to be their advocate. Now as a senior, I must critically look at my profession.
I want a physician who will give honest answers and provide worthy options, allowing me to make medical decisions to sustain quality of life. I don’t care what medical school they went to, what board certifications they have, nor glowing accolades from hospitals and medical societies.
These days I must first “follow the money” and determine whether the opinion rendered is based on medical knowledge, or instead on who signs their paycheck or what drug rep has been in the office. Many doctors are now employed, and have medical decisions handcuffed by bottom-line business interests.
As a doctor for almost forty years, I have successfully navigated the quagmire of advancing medicine because of an obsessive personality and stickler for details. Now as a Medicare patient, I tenaciously seek physicians with moral and ethical character to provide good care and protect my health.
In the past I advocated for my patients, and will continue to do so. But I will also advocate for myself looking for doctors I can trust.
