Doctor’s Diary May 18, 2019: What if your doctor lies?

(Snippets from the frontline)

What if your doctor lies?

Lying is a way of life for some politicians and Wall Street business people.  Even though they might be caught, they will not go to prison.

What if your doctor lies?  In the past, this would be unheard of as the doctor-patient relationship was sacrosanct.  Nowadays, most people barely know their physician.

Many doctors are controlled by contracts through teaching institutes, hospitals, insurance groups, and HMOs.  Some physicians morally compromise good medical decision-making to keep their job.

Here are words knowingly used by doctors to sway patients and families:

Hospice;

futile care;

denied;

has not met criteria;

evidence-based;

comfort care;

not indicated;

SNF (nursing home re-branded skilled nursing facility).

What should you do if you think your physician is lying?:

Get a second opinion;

research medical information on the internet;

don’t be afraid to challenge or confront your doctor.

Truth is essential from physicians who oversee health and well-being, yet some politicians and business people continue to lie without consequence.

Doctors though are already prisoners struggling in their moral dilemma between making profit or upholding the Hippocratic Oath.
