Two problems, one solution
Government is rapidly attempting to rectify the homelessness problem by building permanent housing for those in need. As a geriatric doctor, I simultaneously see a growing threat to older adults as they are sliding off the cliff into the homeless abyss.
The massive Baby Boomer generation moving into retirement and going on Medicare could be facing a crisis forcing them into nursing homes. Some are being nickel and dimed with out-of-pocket expenses shrinking their nest egg; drug costs continue to escalate; loans are acquired to pay medical expenses or face bankruptcy; while many are living longer with chronic illness.
As government attempts to find solutions for homelessness, they should build housing that is also “Senior Friendly”: Single story if possible; minimal steps inside and out; wider doors and hallways; handicap ramp adaptable; grab bars especially in bathrooms; roll-in showers; baseboard nightlights; and gym-like flooring to absorb impact should a person fall.
We hope the homelessness crisis abates, yet the prohibitive present-day costs and known depressing atmosphere of nursing homes will not be avoided by many older adults.
Can government solve two problems with one solution?
Don’t hold your breath.
