Doctor’s Diary April 2, 2020: COVID-19: Shucks

(Snippets from the frontline)

COVID-19:  Shucks

My daughter works in an endemic area, with 7 colleagues and 5 patients positive for COVID-19.  So when she became ill, the test was given.

It took five days, then she sent a photo of the result:  Negative.

Simultaneously, we texted each other:  “Shucks.”

Most of us know if you contract the disease and recover, there is a strong likelihood you are now immune.  Isn’t the human body amazing self-creating antibodies!?

Many people have had COVID-19 and don’t know it.  News is spreading a blood test can reveal you had the illness, but this lab work is not yet widely available.

All of us are afraid of getting ill, and if you do, there is about a 1% chance of dying.  For the other 99%, you could suffer immensely, but once you have it, your fear of getting it again might be alleviated.

My daughter is fine, just no antibodies yet.

Shucks.
