Breathalyzer at the doorway

There is ongoing debate concerning regulation of medicinal and recreational marijuana.  Government interest is raising tax revenue, but there are still moral and ethical social issues surrounding legalization.  Hopefully soon, a breathalyzer similar to that for alcohol will be available to determine whether someone is under the influence.

I believe marijuana is a gateway drug for youth, but it is beneath the biggest gateway drug in society:  Alcohol.

Alcoholism is a disease and addiction, yet alcohol use and access is socially acceptable.  Taxes are recouped, but regulations are not close to how marijuana is now being scrutinized.  Why?

Businesses, including bars and restaurants, use alcohol to attract customers.

Consumption can be excessive, yet many turn their heads even if there is a fatal car accident.

If we are strict on marijuana use, let’s rightfully add a regulation to alcohol:  Wherever it is publicly consumed, before you are allowed to leave, at each doorway will be a breathalyzer.  If you don’t pass, they keep your car keys.

As we try to regulate marijuana, consider re-examining the other gateway drug, alcohol.

At least we have a breathalyzer for it.
