Doctor’s Diary July 5, 2018: We are born equal, but…

(Snippets from the frontline)

We are born equal, but…

When crimes are alleged, those who are poor, of color, undereducated, and legally ill-represented find themselves in prison.  Those who are wealthy have connections, know the system, and hire highfalutin lawyers to run from the crime scene.

A “too big to fail” national bank falsely opens accounts draining the life savings of  seniors;  a car manufacturer intentionally overrides auto emissions polluting the air creating lung and asthma complications for kids; a pharmaceutical company launches a campaign of pain pill distribution resulting in the opioid epidemic.

Their self-serving behavior is based on greed and profit.

All are detrimental to society, injuring, maiming, and killing people.  Yet the only consequence is a slap on the hand and a monetary fine.  Is this justice?

If this were your child, would taking away their allowance be worthy punishment?  How about grounding them, no driving for two weeks, or worse, disconnecting their cell phone!

Will business “too big to fail” learn a lesson if you take away their allowance?  Of course not.  No punishment = continued behavior.

Put them in jail.

We are born equal.
