Doctor’s Diary February 4, 2020: Cocaine in your soda

(Snippets from the frontline)

Cocaine in your soda

In the late 1900s, soda pop contained cocaine and caffeine as acceptable ingredients.  Not until a sensible President, Theodore Roosevelt, was it removed to protect the public.

Early in the 20th Century, most food was adulterated with chemicals used as preservatives (including formaldehyde, boric acid, and salicylic acid) with citizens being poisoned.  Thousands of food workers knew of these and other problems, yet no one criticized contamination until research exposure by U.S. Agriculture Department chemist, Harvey Wiley, and revelations by a journalist, Upton Sinclair in his book The Jungle.

For decades, thousands of innocent victims died on highways from drunk drivers.  A groundswell of mothers (MADD) rose up to lower the statistic.

Americans have always had to fight to live.

Healthcare is now at stake.

Business profit has overwhelmed the need to keep us healthy, yet adequate medical care is the basis for national survival.

Who will rise up to protect the American people:  A President, chemist, journalist, mother, father, doctor, or nurse?

Our future depends on it.
