COVID-19/BLM:  Family history catching up with you

What one says and does in 2020 will be reflected in how our grandchildren judge us in the future.  The past can catch up with you, and those who owned slaves and erected Confederate statues are now loathed.

Harriet Tubman is an American hero depicted in books and movies.  As my wife and I watched a documentary of her escape through the Underground Railroad along Maryland’s Eastern Shore in the 1850s, a Quaker family helped her navigate the way.  The Leverton family was historically integral in this network of “conductors” and “stations” bringing freedom-seeking slaves to the North.

My wife revealed “My family came from the Eastern Shore, were Quakers, and last name was Leverton.”  Within a week, we established through a genealogist she was a direct descendent being their great great great granddaughter!

That explains why Robin continues to help older adults navigate through life at the Senior Center, is a founder of our local chapter of The League of Women Voters, and is on the Santa Clarita Executive Board of the American Association of University Women.

What you say and do is reflected in the future, but the spirit of your family must strive to make grandchildren proud.

Like the Leverton family.
